Funny Cide Keeps Triple Crown Hopes Alive

NEW ORLEANS - Sackatoga Stable's Funny Cide kept his Triple Crown hopes alive with a near-record setting win in the Preakness Stakes Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

Funny Cide stalked pacesetters Peace Rules and Cherokee's Boy before making his move as the field entered the far turn. Under confident handling by Jose Santos, Funny Cide exploded to the lead and went on to win by 9 3/4 lengths, the second-largest margin of victory in Preakness history.

Funny Cide, awarded second place in the Louisiana Derby, will go for a $5 million VISA bonus on June 7 in the Belmont Stakes.

Fair Grounds Concludes 131st Season
Leading Jockey Robby AlbaradoLeading Trainer Steve Asmussen

NEW ORLEANS - Fair Grounds Race Course concluded its 131st season of racing Monday with attendance up slightly and handle down both on-track and from all sources.

In its 84-day meet, a total of $357.5 million, or an average of $4.26 million per day, was wagered on Fair Grounds races. That represented a 5.4 percent decline from last year's average of $4.5 million.

The average daily attendance of 2,217 was up 0.6 percent from last season though handle declined, indicative of the increasing methods to wager away from the track. On-track handle totaled $19.3 million or $230,326 per day, a drop of 9.9 percent. Wagers made on track through Fair Grounds accounts are not included in on-track handle numbers.
